Practical Ideas That Really Work for Students Who Are Gifted

Practical Ideas That Really Work for Students Who Are Gifted is just what many educators have been looking for:

  • A tool for coordinators and specialists in gifted education and teachers in both general and gifted education classes to use to gather information about behaviors that may be indicative of giftedness.
  • A product that provides teachers with practical strategies to assist in differentiating instruction for students who are gifted or who show potential for performing at high levels of accomplishment.
  • Practical Ideas That Really Work for Students Who Are Gifted includes two components:
  • An easy to use evaluation form to rate a student's talent areas and select strategies that can be used to differentiate instruction; and
  • A book of practical ideas, containing 30 instructional strategies, explanations of the strategies, helpful illustrations and examples, and over 90 reproducible forms

The talent areas addressed are organized into four categories that correspond to those in the most recent U.S. Office of Education's definition proposed in the 1993 National Excellence report. Both the talent areas and their corresponding differentiated instructional strategies have been well researched to ensure that the instructional strategies included are effective to use when working with high ability and gifted students.

The rating scale consists of 40 items measuring four talent areas: general intellectual ability, specific academic aptitude, creativity, and leadership and is linked directly to the planning matrix, which allows for the selection of several appropriate instructional strategies. It has been field-tested to ensure reliability and validity. In addition, the scale differentiates between students identified as gifted and students who have not been identified. Students identified as gifted were rated significantly higher on the scale than other students.

The authors, who have written three other Practical Ideas That Really Work materials, one for students with ADHD, one for students with autism spectrum disorders, and one for students with disruptive, defiant, or difficult behaviors remain focused on helping teachers and other educators design practical and effective methods. They are pleased to provide new ideas that can help students excel academically and learn leadership roles.
