Practical Ideas That Really Work for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders - 2nd Edition

We created Practical Ideas That Really Work for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders for educators who work with students who have autism or other developmental disorders that interfere with their ability to learn and to function in social situations. The materials are intended for use with students in preschool through Grade 12 and include to main components: a Book of Practical Ideas and an Evaluation Form. These materials are quick and easy to implement in the classroom. They focus on the most effective and widely used ideas, based on our comprehensive review of autism spectrum disorders.

The Book of Practical Ideas contains 37 instructional strategies that can be used to improve students' social interaction and communication and to decrease their repetitive/stereotypical patterns of behavior. The ideas in the manual are presented in an easy-to-use format that includes:

  • a one-page explanation of each idea
  • handy tips to increase each idea's effectiveness
  • helpful illustrations and examples
  • reproducible masters for most ideas

The Evaluation Form consists of two components, the rating scale and the ideas matrix. Use the rating scale to evaluate behaviors that interfere with student learning and social interactions. Items on the scale are behavior descriptions that align with the DSM-IV indicators for autistic disorders and asperger's disorder. Additionally, many of the items apply to childhood disintegrative disorder and Rett's disorder.

The criterion-referenced rating scale is not intended to be used to diagnose these disorders; rather, it is intended as a tool for determining intervention strategies and writing IEP goals and objectives. Use the results of the rating scale to select possible solutions for increasing desired behaviors or improving problem behaviors from the ideas matrix. The matrix systematically links the results of the rating scale to intervention ideas. Use the matrix as a tool for selecting the most appropriate interventions to meet each student's needs.
