The CAT-kit : The Cognitive Affective Training Kit
The purpose of the CAT-kit is to help children gain greater insight into social relationships and friendships, enhancing their ability to self-reflect and understand others' needs and intentions.
The CAT-kit, which is unique in its design, is neither a game nor a test. It is a conversational tool consisting of a series of elements that can be used in combination or separately during a conversation.
These elements - for example, a face, body, a measuring instrument - are designed to be strong visual symbols that provide focus and structure to the conversation, and become the agents through which the child can directly and more easily express thoughts and emotions.
You can write on the elements with a white board marker, and at the end of each session, before the writing is erased, the elements can be photocopied to record the child's thoughts and feelings and reviewed during the next CAT-kit conversation.
The CAT-kit can be used by:
- Parents who need concrete, practical tools to facilitate conversations about thoughts and feelings with their children.
- Teachers and educationalists who need specific resources to structure their conversations with children when addressing such topics as conflict resolution, or ways to express thoughts and emotions.
- Psychologists and therapists who can use the material as part of a cognitive behavioral therapy program or emotion communication program.
