This month’s recipient of Postscripts Fresh Ideas recognition goes to Ysleta Independent School District for its recent efforts to fight childhood obesity. The District is one of the latest to launch the CATCH program, Coordinated Approach to Child Health. The CATCH program is one of the coordinated school health programs selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as part of their “Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child” model. CATCH offers separate modules targeting Pre-K through 8th grade. According to the CATCH website, it offers a holistic approach that involves health education, the school environment, and community/family support. Its aim is to make learning about nutrition and engaging in physical activity fun. According to KFOX-TV14, Ysleta ISD launched the program in 14 elementary schools just last month.
